The best way to begin thinking about a warranty is to tell the used car salesperson you assume the price includes warranty, even if you don't. That way they might agree that it does, thinking that you are really interested in buying it and throw in the warranty for free.

If the salesperson says the price doesn't include the warranty, if you do choose to purchase the car you might want to buy an extended warranty of some sort. You can do this by getting the price of the warranty factored into the total price so everything will be factored into one payment for you to make. When you do it this way, it doesn't seem like such a large amount to pay for the warranty and it will likely save you thousands if you ever need to use it.
